Sunchuang Decoration Sun Wei: Everyone is growing up

In 1998, the Chinese State Council made a landmark decision to completely stop the physical distribution of housing and instead implement a monetary housing system. This move marked what became known as the "Year of Housing Reform." In the years leading up to and following this policy change, a massive influx of residential properties entered the Beijing real estate market, ushering in a golden era for the home improvement industry. During this time, many of today’s well-known home improvement companies in Beijing were born. At that time, Creative Decoration was just a small firm based in Yanshan, a suburban area southwest of Beijing. Its founder, Sun Wei, was described as someone who was financially secure but lacked grand ambitions. However, over the years, Creative Decoration has grown significantly. It now holds a strong position in Beijing thanks to its innovative home improvement package model. The company has also gained national recognition for its efficient production processes, design capabilities, and comprehensive terminal systems. Sun Wei refers to this transformation as "growing up." From the establishment of the first professional decoration company in 1982 to 2012, the total output value of the construction and decoration industry reached an impressive 2.63 trillion yuan. Within this market, there has been little large-scale capital entry, and government policies have had minimal impact. As Sun Wei put it, "Where else can you find such a favorable industry?" He credits his company's smooth growth to this "favorable environment." Throughout the company's development, Sun Wei often recalls moments filled with "no way," "forced choices," and "helplessness." His decisions were frequently guided by instinct rather than strict business logic. His approach usually involved finding simple solutions to complex problems—such as introducing standardized pricing methods for home improvement packages or building in-house factories and logistics centers to control the supply chain. These strategies were rare in the traditional home improvement sector. After nearly 20 years in the home improvement industry, Sun Wei still considers himself a "rich and safe" person. However, he acknowledges that there are many others on the same journey. To support the company's growth, he brought in professional managers, hoping that Shichuang would eventually become a multi-billion-yuan enterprise. He quickly added, "This isn't due to my own abilities—I don’t have that kind of talent."
