World-class Big Mac PCD drawing die blank is born

**Abstract** For many years, the drawing of large-diameter metal wires has been a persistent challenge in the industry. Currently, hard alloy wire drawing dies are commonly used for this process. However, these materials come with several limitations—such as high running speeds, non-reproducible mold repairs, and uneven wire quality—which have become increasingly problematic for manufacturers. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) wire drawing dies offer a promising alternative to traditional hard alloys. Yet, the largest PCD drawing die blanks are only available from Sumitomo in Japan, and their high cost makes them inaccessible to many end users. Domestic manufacturers using six-sided top presses have struggled to overcome this issue due to several key challenges: 1. The size of the PCD blank is limited by the synthesis cavity. This is especially true in China, where six-sided presses are smaller than the two-sided presses used abroad. 2. Ensuring consistent performance across all parts of a large PCD die is extremely difficult. 3. Large PCD blanks require strict control throughout the entire manufacturing process. Even small deviations can lead to issues like cracking, delamination, surface burning, or internal unsintering. To address these challenges, many PCD blanks for large-diameter wires are currently supported by hard alloy. In other words, a polycrystalline diamond core is embedded into a hard alloy mold sleeve through a special process, allowing it to withstand higher tension and be used for larger diameter wires. In response to these challenges, Sifangda has conducted extensive research and successfully developed the "Big Mac" series of PCD drawing blanks designed for large-diameter wire drawing. These blanks have been officially recognized as scientific and technological achievements, reaching international advanced standards. The largest die blank produced by Sifangda has an outer diameter of 67mm, with a PCD core diameter of up to 40mm and a thickness of 25mm. Currently, only Sumitomo Electric and Sifangda are capable of producing such large PCD blanks. However, Sifangda’s technology is based on domestic six-sided top presses, which makes the production process more complex but also results in a more cost-effective solution. This allows Sifangda’s products to fully replace carbide drawing die blanks in the large-diameter wire field and compete with imported alternatives. Moreover, the launch of this product series has expanded Sifangda’s range of specifications, offering high-end options with different diamond particle sizes (1–50μm), metal-based and ceramic-based thermal stability series, and more. These products are ideal for applications such as drawing hard wires, cables, and large-diameter wires, meeting diverse customer needs.
