Sunchuang Decoration Sun Wei: Everyone is growing up

In 1998, the Chinese State Council announced a major policy shift: the end of physical housing distribution and the introduction of monetary compensation for housing. This marked the beginning of what became known as the "housing reform year." In the years leading up to and following this decision, a surge of residential properties flooded into the Beijing real estate market, creating a golden era for the home improvement industry. During this time, many of today's well-known home improvement companies in Beijing were born. At that time, Creative Decoration was just a small firm based in Yanshan, a suburban area in southwest Beijing. Its founder, Sun Wei, was described as someone who was financially secure but lacked grand ambitions. However, over the years, Creative Decoration has grown significantly. It established itself in Beijing by pioneering an innovative home improvement package model and gradually gained national recognition for its reliable production systems, creative design, and efficient terminal services. Sun Wei refers to this journey as "growing up." From the founding of the first professional decoration company in 1982 to 2012, the total output value of the construction and decoration industry reached 2.63 trillion yuan. Throughout this period, the market remained largely untapped by large capital players, with minimal government intervention. As Sun Wei put it, "What a great industry is this?" He credits his company’s smooth growth to this favorable environment. Looking back at the key moments in the company's history, Sun Wei often uses words like "no way," "forced," and "helpless" to describe the challenges faced. His decisions were often guided by intuition rather than strict business logic. For instance, he introduced standardized pricing methods in home improvement packages and even built his own factories and logistics centers to control the supply chain—innovations that were rare in the traditional home improvement sector. After nearly 20 years in the industry, Sun Wei still sees himself as a "rich and safe" person. But he also acknowledges that there are many others on the same journey. To ensure long-term success, he brought in professional managers, hoping that Shichuang could eventually become a company worth tens of billions. Yet, he quickly adds, "This isn’t my ability. I don’t have such great capabilities."
