In 1967, IGM was founded in Austria. The company expanded its operations to China in 1990 and established Beijing Aijiemo Robot System Co., Ltd. in 2006. As the exclusive partner of the GlobalWeldingTechnologies (GWT) Group in China, Aijiemo plays a key role in promoting GWT’s robotic and electron beam welding technologies within the Chinese market. GWT grants Aijiemo sales, distribution rights for Aijiemer robotics and electron beam systems, as well as production rights for certain components. Additionally, Aijiemo supports the assembly and commissioning of customer systems across China.
On March 31, 2014, our reporter visited Beijing Aijiemo Robot System Co., Ltd. (referred to as Aijiemo). During the visit, Sales Director Xia Lei provided a detailed overview of the company's background and introduced the unique features and advantages of IGM robots. He also guided the reporter through the company’s electron beam welding and robot assembly facilities, offering an inside look at their operations.

**Focusing on Arc Welding Robots in Two Major Sectors**
As we entered the office space, it was clear that the environment was well-organized with minimal decoration. Xia Lei shared the company’s basic information with the reporter. According to his introduction, IGM’s robotic products primarily focus on large-scale structural arc welding robots, which are widely used in two major industries: rail vehicles and construction machinery.
With the growing trend of using aluminum alloy car bodies in railway transportation and urban rail systems, the demand for high-quality welding solutions has increased. However, welding aluminum can be challenging due to issues like porosity and cracking. Given the size of structural parts such as car bodies and bogies, robotic welding has become the preferred choice for manufacturers. Similarly, the construction machinery industry also requires efficient welding solutions for large structural components, where IGM robots offer significant advantages.
For example, the RTi400 modular robot system from IGM features a working radius of 1500–2600 mm, expandable up to 5200 mm with external rotation and linear axis adjustments. The rail RTS can extend up to 85 meters, while the TPA3 gantry spans up to 12 meters with a maximum stroke of 130 meters. The design of the rotating base and the use of a hinged shaft significantly improve the welding efficiency for complex workpieces.
During the conversation, the reporter could sense Xia Lei’s strong confidence in IGM’s position in both the rail vehicle and construction machinery sectors. He mentioned that IGM robots are already being used by major Chinese companies like CSR and CNR Group. In the construction machinery industry, global leaders such as Caterpillar and Komatsu have also chosen IGM as a reliable partner.
**Comprehensive Performance Advantages**
As the reporter followed Xia into the assembly workshop, they were introduced to a large robotic system under assembly. Xia explained that IGM develops and produces its own laser sensors, which help simplify the control system. This not only enhances performance but also reduces complexity.
Additionally, during the visit, Xia demonstrated the programming and offline teaching capabilities of IGM robots. The control panel interface is fully in Chinese, making it user-friendly and intuitive. Operators don’t need to write any code—only inputting parameters via the Windows-based interface is required. The K5 teach pendant and offline teaching system are among IGM’s standout features. Other notable innovations include the use of a hollow shaft to optimize the wrist’s geometric contour, allowing the welding gun to perform at its best. The robot can also automatically replace the welding torch and hose bundle using a clamping device on the wrist.
When asked about the competitive advantages of IGM robots, Xia said, “I can’t claim that every single aspect of IGM robots is the best, but in terms of overall performance, their strengths are clearly visible.â€
**Value Determines Price**
With the industrial robot market becoming increasingly competitive, many manufacturers are engaging in price wars. However, IGM robots do not compete directly on price. So why do they remain successful? Xia explained, “IGM has a strong brand reputation. From the design of each module to the configuration of the welding power source—often using Fonnis or Lincoln power supplies—their products are highly recognized in the market.â€
Throughout the visit, the reporter was impressed by Xia’s calm demeanor, the harmonious work environment, and the well-organized setting at Aijiemo. It was evident that this team has been instrumental in driving the company’s steady growth over the years.
