In 1967, IGM was founded in Austria. It began operations in China in 1990 and established Beijing Aijiemo Robot System Co., Ltd. in 2006. As the exclusive partner of the GlobalWeldingTechnologies (GWT) Group in China, Aijiemo has been actively driving business growth within the country. GWT grants Aijiemo the rights to sell and distribute IGM's robotic and electron beam systems, as well as the production rights for certain components. Additionally, Aijiemo is responsible for supporting the assembly and commissioning of customer systems across China.
On March 31, 2014, our reporter visited Beijing Aijiemo Robot System Co., Ltd. (referred to as Aijiemo). Xia Lei, the Sales Director, provided a detailed overview of the company and introduced the features and advantages of IGM robots. He also accompanied the reporter through the company’s electron beam welding and robot assembly workshops.

**Focus on Arc Welding Robots in Key Industries**
Upon entering the office, the space was neatly organized with minimal decoration beyond essential office supplies. Xia Lei shared the company’s background with the reporter. According to him, IGM’s robotic products primarily focus on large-scale structural arc welding robots, used in two major industries: rail vehicles and construction machinery.
With the increasing use of aluminum alloy car bodies in the railway and urban transit sectors, welding challenges such as porosity and cracks have become significant concerns. Given the size of structural parts like car bodies and bogies, robotic welding has become the preferred choice for manufacturers. Similarly, in the construction machinery industry, the demand for robotic welding of large components is growing rapidly. IGM’s robots are designed to excel in these applications.
For instance, the RTi400 modular robot series offers a working radius of 1,500–2,600 mm, with an extended reach of up to 5,200 mm when using external rotation or linear axes. The RTS rail system can extend up to 85 meters, while the TPA3 gantry spans up to 12 meters with a maximum stroke of 130 meters. The rotating base and hinged shaft design significantly enhance welding efficiency for complex workpieces.
During the conversation, the reporter sensed Xia’s strong confidence in IGM’s presence in both the rail and construction machinery sectors. He mentioned that IGM robots are already in use at CSR and CNR Group, and internationally recognized companies like Caterpillar and Komatsu are among their clients.
**Comprehensive Performance Advantages**
As the reporter entered the assembly workshop, Xia introduced a large robot system under development. He explained that IGM develops and produces its own laser sensors, which simplify the control system to a great extent.
Additionally, during the visit, Xia demonstrated the programming and offline teaching capabilities of the IGM robot. The control panel interface was fully in Chinese, making it easy for operators to navigate. No coding or programming language was required—operators could simply input parameters through a Windows-based interface. The K5 teach pendant and offline teaching system are standout features of IGM. Other key innovations include the wrist axis design with a hollow shaft, allowing optimal positioning of the welding gun, and the automatic replacement of the welding torch and hose bundle via a clamping device on the wrist.
When asked about the competitive advantages of IGM robots, Xia said, “I can’t claim that every aspect of IGM robots is the best, but in terms of overall performance, the advantages are clear.â€
**Value Determines Price**
With the industrial robot market expanding rapidly, competition has intensified, leading to price wars among many manufacturers. However, IGM robots are not known for being the cheapest option. So, why do they remain competitive? Xia explained, “IGM has strong brand recognition. From the design of each module to the configuration of the welding power supply (usually Fonnis or Lincoln), IGM’s welding products are widely accepted in the market.â€
Throughout the visit, the reporter was impressed by Xia’s calm demeanor, the harmonious work environment, and the orderly setup of the facility. It was clear that this team has contributed to Aijiemo’s steady growth over the years.
