On November 9, the "2013 Beijing Sustainable Decoration Public Welfare Activities" took place in Beijing. This event was organized by several key institutions, including the China National Institute of Standardization, the Beijing Building Decoration Association, and Fangyuan Certification Group. They jointly launched two important standards: the "Residential Building Decoration Quality Acceptance Code" and the "Code for Design, Construction and Acceptance of Electrical and Intelligent Systems for Decoration Engineering." These local standards are now mandatory, aiming to bring more clarity and quality control to residential renovation projects.
With the increasing use of smart home technology and digital appliances, many homeowners are unsure about what standards should guide their renovations. Questions such as how to properly wire a house, how to design and construct smart systems, and what criteria should be used for acceptance have long been a source of confusion. Some unscrupulous decoration companies take advantage of this lack of knowledge, charging high fees while delivering substandard work, using low-quality materials, or even engaging in misleading practices like "greenwashing." In addition, poor internal management, subcontracting issues, and lack of transparency often lead to disputes between consumers and service providers.
To address these concerns, the Beijing Building Decoration Association, a 5A-level industry organization, has been actively working on promoting sustainable development in the sector. The newly released standards were developed in collaboration with leading home improvement companies and approved by the Beijing Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau. As an essential local regulation, these codes are expected to bring much-needed structure and accountability to the industry, helping to reduce common consumer complaints and improve overall quality.
During the event, experts from the United Nations Sustainable Consumption and Production Support Center and the Swedish Environmental Science Research Institute shared insights into sustainable decoration practices abroad. Additionally, the EU’s Sustainable Interior Decoration Project (SUS BIRD) awarded honorary certificates to 11 Chinese demonstration projects that exemplify eco-friendly and energy-efficient renovation methods. Among them, Lanjing Lijia became the only home store to win the award for its innovative automated canopy shade system.
The SUS BIRD project is an international initiative supported by the European Union. It aims to promote the use of environmentally friendly materials, energy-saving electrical equipment, and water-saving appliances. By encouraging the adoption of green practices, it helps both consumers and businesses make more sustainable choices. As a nationally recognized third-party certification body, Fangyuan Logo plays a key role in implementing these standards, ensuring that projects meet high environmental and energy efficiency benchmarks.
