When decorating a bathroom, it's essential to take into account waterproofing and moisture resistance throughout the entire process. This includes wall and floor tiling, ceiling installation, pipe work, and the selection of fixtures. A proper waterproof layer should be installed beneath the surface materials, such as tiles or stone. Start by leveling the floor with cement mortar and applying a waterproof coating. Then, spread a thin layer of 1 to 2 cm cement mortar as a bonding layer before laying the floor tiles or other decorative elements. After watering, use a wooden board to press the tiles flat and ensure tight seams. Before installing the stone, apply a back coating to prevent water stains.
The waterproof layer should extend up the walls by about 25 to 30 cm above the floor level. The sink should be installed at a height between 1.0 to 1.2 meters, while the shower area should be around 1.8 meters high. If you're painting, use waterproof putty and coating to ensure durability. The surface should slope slightly toward the drain to avoid water pooling. After a 24-hour water test, there should be no leaks or standing water.
For the ceiling, consider using suspended ceilings with micro-aluminum gussets for better ventilation and to prevent condensation. If using gypsum board, first apply waterproof putty and then a waterproof coating. PVC ceilings can collect condensation and may drip, so they should be used carefully.
Pipes should be installed in a straight line, avoiding unnecessary changes to the original plumbing layout. Ensure they are securely fastened and have the correct slope. Valves and faucets should be installed in a straight, accessible manner. Apply anti-rust paint to visible pipes and anti-corrosive paint to hidden ones. Water supply pipes must be tightly connected to fixtures and checked for leaks through a pressure test. Floor drains should align with the main sewer line and be slightly lower than the surrounding floor.
Sanitary fixtures should be placed correctly, with their top edges level. Choose branded products that offer good waterproof performance. For example, a shower heater used in a humid environment should have a stainless steel casing for corrosion resistance and include a waterproof power switch, cable, and plug. This ensures safety even if water splashes on them. Also, install waterproof light covers and outlets for added protection.
Avoid using wood in the bathroom unless it’s treated with fireproof board or fully oiled to make it waterproof. When constructing ceilings or other structures, any hidden wooden framework should be coated with waterproofing or preservative to prevent damage from moisture.
