Spring carrot cultivation technology

In recent years, as living standards have improved continuously, the area dedicated to off-season spring sowing carrot cultivation has been steadily increasing. This article outlines the key techniques involved in growing carrots during the spring season. First, selecting the right variety is crucial for successful spring sowing. It is recommended to choose varieties that are resistant to cracking, have good quality, high yield, and mature early to mid-season. Varieties such as Xinhei 5-inch, Hongxin 4, and Chunhong No. 1 fall into this category. The seeding rate should be around 0.75 kg per hectare, with a sowing rate of 1–1.5 kg per mu. Second, the cultivation techniques play a vital role in ensuring a healthy crop. The first step is determining the optimal sowing date. Sowing too late can lead to root deformation due to high temperatures exceeding 25°C, which is not ideal for root development. The ideal temperature range for root expansion is 18–25°C. Based on practical experience, if the selected variety is resistant to cracking, sowing can begin when the daily average temperature reaches 10°C and the night average is around 7°C. In North China, planting typically occurs in early April in the north and late March in the south. In central and southern China, early March is suitable, while in alpine areas like the northwest and northeast, sowing takes place from late April to early May. Soil preparation is also essential. Carrots require well-drained sandy loam or loamy soil that is deep and fertile. Before sowing, the soil should be deeply tilled to a depth of at least 25 cm. Incorporating 5,000 kg of farmyard manure per 667 m², along with 15 kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer and quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, will enhance soil fertility. Due to the low temperatures in spring, carrot seeds do not absorb water easily, leading to slow germination. To speed up the process, soaking and germinating the seeds before sowing is recommended. Soak the seeds in warm water (30–35°C) for 3–4 hours, then wrap them in a moist towel or bag and keep them at 25–30°C for 4 days, stirring and rinsing regularly. Once 80%–90% of the seeds have sprouted, mix them with wet sand and sow them. After sowing, cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and apply mulch, which can be replaced by grass or straw. Field management is another critical aspect. After sowing, it's important to keep the soil moist by watering immediately or pressing the soil and watering again. This creates favorable conditions for seed germination and emergence. Once the seedlings emerge, remove the cover on a windless morning. Thin the seedlings twice: the first time when there are 1–2 true leaves, removing weak or overgrown plants; the second time when there are 3–4 true leaves, spacing them 9 cm apart with a row spacing of 15–18 cm. Weeding is essential for high yields, and herbicides can be used, such as 50% grass at 450 kg mixed with 75 kg of water. Additionally, ensure the soil is loosened regularly to prevent the fleshy roots from emerging above ground, which can cause green shoulders. Watering and fertilizing the crop once or twice during its growth period is also necessary. The first application occurs 5–7 days after thinning, using 3 kg of ammonium sulfate and 3 kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer per 667 m². The second application takes place when the plant has 8–9 true leaves, a period of high water demand, using 7.5 kg of ammonium sulfate and 3.5 kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer per 667 m². Harvesting should be done in late June to early July, depending on local conditions and market demand. When the plants are mature, the leaves stop growing, and the lower ones turn yellow. If stored in a cold room at 0–3°C, the carrots can be preserved and supplied throughout the summer.
