Two major trends in the future development of ceramic tile industry in China

In the current landscape of China's ceramic tile industry, foreign brands—especially Italian ones—hold a significant share of the market. This dominance is largely attributed to two key factors: first, the advanced production equipment used in Italy ensures high precision and quality, with many Chinese manufacturers importing this technology. Second, Italian tiles are known for their dense structure, low water absorption, and high wear resistance, making them highly desirable. One innovative product, a negative ion-embedded brick from a well-known brand, adds an anion layer composed of ultra-fine tourmaline powder and rare earth elements on top of the glaze and base layers. These tiles release negative ions equivalent to that of 15 square meters of forest, offering a healthier living environment. As the tile market becomes more specialized, consumers now have a wider range of size options, leading to a clear trend toward both large and small tiles. Large tiles are increasingly popular due to the demand for seamless wall designs and the rise in large residential spaces. For instance, indoor wall tiles typically measure around 250x360 mm, while floor tiles in living rooms are usually no smaller than 500x500 mm. In larger spaces exceeding 40 m², even bigger sizes are preferred. Producing large tiles is more complex than making smaller ones, requiring greater attention to gloss, texture, flatness, and water absorption. Visually, they offer more striking color, texture, and decorative effects compared to traditional tiles. On the other hand, small-sized tiles are also gaining popularity. Their versatility allows for intricate patterns and makes them ideal for small wall areas. Some textured small tiles can evoke a European pastoral style, adding charm to any space. Italian design remains a global benchmark, and both China and Spain have long followed its trends. However, Chinese manufacturers are now focusing on developing unique styles through innovation. The competition for high-end product lines has intensified, with companies continuously expanding their color and variety options. Despite this growth, challenges remain, including rising costs and intense international competition. Italy accounts for 60% of global ceramic tile exports, while China and Spain together hold less than 40%. Italian tiles are not only renowned for their design and quality but also for their cost-effectiveness. However, importation models have led to higher retail prices in China. Recently, over 30 top home furnishing brands, including Medici, have collaborated with Italian manufacturers to set uniform pricing, offering consumers better value and transparency. In 2013, ceramic tile exports from China continued to grow, driven by cost advantages and increasing global demand. Despite trade barriers, exports reached over 1.1 billion square meters, marking a 10% increase. The industry also saw a major shift with the adoption of inkjet printing technology, which allowed for more detailed and diverse designs. Domestic inkjet printing equipment expanded rapidly, and specialized applications for different tile types emerged. With the upcoming thin ceramic tile standard, the industry moved toward lighter, more efficient products. Environmental concerns, such as energy efficiency and waste recycling, became central to research and development. Companies were also pushed to improve occupational health, safety, and social responsibility, increasing investment in sustainable practices. Amid rising domestic production costs and fierce international competition, moving upmarket and focusing on high-profit lines became essential for survival and growth in the ceramic tile industry.
