In a small, neatly arranged corner of the room, there's a space that's often overlooked—yet it plays a crucial role in maintaining hygiene. People who value cleanliness pay attention to every nook and cranny, including the bathroom, the bathtub, the floor, and even those hidden spots that most people tend to ignore. One such area is the shower.
Many people neglect cleaning their showers, which can lead to serious health risks. According to recent research by American scientists, showers can become breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi if not cleaned regularly. Over time, these microbes can mix with water and cause skin irritation or, worse, infections, especially for those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include dry, itchy skin, persistent coughs, and breathing difficulties.
A reporter surveyed over 20 citizens randomly, and 18 admitted they rarely check whether their showers are clean. Only two mentioned occasionally using a brush to clean the showerhead when they noticed reduced water flow. "I haven't cleaned my shower in a long time," said Ms. Li. "It works fine, and I’ve never had any skin issues." However, others were more aware of the potential dangers.
Ms. Wang shared her experience: "I only clean it when the showerhead gets clogged. I use a brush to scrub the outlet. If I knew it could cause skin problems, I’d clean it more often."
Experts recommend cleaning your shower at least once every six months. Dr. Yan Kuanhou from Xi'an Jiaotong University First Affiliated Hospital explained that showers, being in a humid environment, especially during summer, can foster fungal growth. This can lead to infections in immunocompromised individuals or allergic reactions in sensitive people, such as asthma flare-ups.
Dr. Zhang from a hospital in Xi'an added that running hot water for a few minutes before use can help kill some germs. When bathing, avoid letting water enter your eyes or mouth.
To keep your shower clean, you can soak it in a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:9 ratio) for an hour, or use bleach and disinfectants. Regular maintenance is key, but if the shower is old and worn, replacing it might be the best option.
Some people prefer using citric acid for descaling, while others choose copper showerheads over rubber ones to prevent blockages. As one person put it, “If something has been used for years, it’s better to replace it.â€
Cleaning your shower isn’t just about appearance—it’s about health. Don’t overlook this important part of your bathroom.
