Burning a burned rubber gloves

When it comes to washing dishes, many people reach for a pair of rubber gloves to protect their hands. However, recent discussions on social media have raised concerns about the safety of certain types of rubber gloves. Some users claim that non-natural rubber gloves may release carcinogens over time, prompting questions about their safety. A few media outlets have even suggested that burning a glove can help determine if it's made from natural rubber or not. The logic goes that if the glove emits heavy smoke and leaves behind a lot of particles when burned, it might contain recycled waste materials. But is this method reliable? To find out, a reporter conducted an experiment.

Experimental Materials

The reporter purchased four different pairs of rubber gloves—labeled A, B, C, and D—from both farmers’ markets and large supermarkets. Each pair was cut into small samples using scissors, and then tested by lighting them with a lighter.

Experimental Procedure

Glove A, priced at 7 yuan and bought from a local market, burned quickly and released thick black smoke along with a strong, pungent odor. After burning, it left behind granular residue. Glove B, which cost 12 yuan, behaved similarly—burning fast, producing smoke, and leaving behind a lot of particles. Glove C, a branded product from a supermarket, also showed the same characteristics. Finally, Glove D, the most expensive at 20 yuan, burned just as rapidly, emitting large amounts of black smoke and leaving behind dark, sticky residues.

Experimental Results

Despite differences in brand and price, all four gloves exhibited similar combustion behavior: they burned quickly, produced smoke, and left behind significant particulate matter. This suggests that the burning test does not reliably distinguish between high-quality and low-quality gloves.

Expert Statement

According to industry experts, burning a rubber glove is not a reliable way to assess its quality. “Pure natural rubber burns more evenly and produces less smoke,” one insider explained. “If other materials are added, such as recycled components, the molecular structure changes, and the material may evaporate before fully burning, resulting in more smoke.” While some gloves may contain recycled materials, this doesn’t necessarily make them inferior. In fact, the use of safe and harmless additives is common in the production of rubber products and is even encouraged for energy recovery purposes.

Experts also emphasized that determining the safety of rubber gloves isn’t simply about whether they burn or not. It’s more about the type of recycled materials used and whether they are non-toxic. “Some recycled materials may carry harmful bacteria or viruses, especially if they come from medical waste,” one expert warned. “Using such gloves for dishwashing or cooking could pose serious health risks.”

Safety Valve

Safety valve also known as pressure relief valve, back pressure valve is automatically open and close according to the working pressure of the system. It is generally installed on the equipment or pipeline of the closed system to protect the system safe. When the pressure or temperature of the equipment or pipeline exceeds the set pressure of the safety valve, the pressure relief or temperature drop will be automatically opened to ensure that the medium pressure (temperature) in the equipment and pipeline is under the set pressure (temperature), so as to protect the normal operation of the equipment and pipeline, prevent accidents and reduce losses. Safety valve is widely used in: steam boiler, liquefied petroleum gas tank car or liquefied petroleum gas railway tank car, oil production well, high pressure bypass of steam power generation equipment, pressure pipeline, pressure vessel, etc.

We produce plastic safety valve, plastic back pressure valve by UPVC, CPVC, PVDF, PP, SS304, SS316, Size from 1/2" to 2-1/2". with different standard of DIN ANSI JIS BSPT.
