Firefighters, equipped with protective gear made from God Six materials, are expected to survive intense fires. Yesterday, a reporter learned from the Shanghai Institute of Textile Science that the city's key science and technology research project "1000 tons of aromatic sulfone industrialization research" has successfully passed its acceptance test. This high-temperature-resistant fiber, previously used in God V and Shenzhou VI missions, will achieve kiloton-scale production by 2007, making it widely available for use in firefighting uniforms, fire blankets, and other critical equipment.
Zhu Yisheng, Director of Scientific Research at the Institute, explained that this material, known as "aryl sulfone," is among the most heat-resistant fibers globally. It can remain undamaged even at temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius. In comparison, the most advanced foreign aramid materials only withstand 180 to 200 degrees Celsius. This breakthrough represents a significant leap forward in thermal protection technology.
Zhu emphasized that China’s "aryl sulfone" is developed with independent intellectual property rights and has already been tested and verified on the Shenwu and Shenji spacecraft. He noted that the next major step is to overcome the challenges of industrialization, which involves setting up a full-scale production line to meet the growing demand for firefighting gear. By early 2007, a 1,000-ton production line is expected to be fully operational.
Zhu also revealed that once the industrialization process is complete, the cost of "Fairy sulfone" fire service suits will be under 2,000 yuan per set. "Besides being more affordable, our garments can endure temperatures up to 50 degrees higher than current standards. It is anticipated that the country's future firefighting services will extensively adopt this fiber," he said.
Currently, similar fireproof suits in the U.S. cost around 5,000 RMB per set. Meanwhile, traditional heat-resistant fibers from countries like France have already shown interest in importing "aryl sulfone." This development marks a significant milestone for China’s textile industry and could lead to broader international adoption of the material in the coming years.
