The thorny vegetable, commonly known as the small scorpion, is a persistent perennial weed that spreads widely across the country. It primarily affects dry crops such as wheat, cotton, and soybeans. Due to its highly developed rhizome system, it exhibits strong resistance to herbicides, making it challenging to control. According to the **pesticide network**, 2,4-D has shown some effectiveness against thorny vegetables. It can be applied during the 4th leaf stage of wheat, but before the jointing stage.
Field efficacy tests from 2011 evaluated various herbicides against invasive weeds. Researchers at the Institute of Plant Protection, Tai'an Academy of Agricultural Sciences, conducted trials using several products, including 48% wheat straw water-repellent agent, 10% bensulfuron-methyl WP, 20% fluoxetine EC, 40% oxazolone water-dispersible granules, 25% octanoyl bromoxynil emulsifiable concentrate, 10% acesulfame emulsifiable concentrate, 56% 2,4-D soluble powder, and 48% herbicide water weeding. The recommended application rates per hectare were 201.6 g, 15 g, 180 g, 30 g, 300 g, 90 g, 800 g, and 1000 g, respectively. The results showed varying levels of control: 70.69%, 44.95%, 19.91%, 28.48%, 38.05%, 64.88%, 43.21%, and 29.81% for the number of plants, and 88.67%, 71.63%, 48.95%, 53.07%, 55.24%, 84.69%, 63.84%, and 57.54% for fresh weight reduction.
Among the tested herbicides, dicamba and fluoroglycofen showed better control effects on thistle and other broadleaf weeds in severe wheat fields. Dicamba is a systemic herbicide that is absorbed through the stems and leaves of weeds and transported via the phloem. It accumulates in the meristematic tissues, disrupting plant hormone functions and leading to weed death. It effectively controls a wide range of broadleaf weeds, including swinegrass, cocklebur, thorns, leeks, snails, barnyard grass, sage, and large nests. Symptoms such as leaf curling and deformation appear within 24 hours, with complete death occurring after 15–20 days. Dicamba is rapidly metabolized in grasses, making it safe for wheat when applied from the 4th leaf stage until just before jointing. It should not be used before the 4th leaf stage or after jointing. In soil, dicamba breaks down quickly due to microbial activity, posing no risk to subsequent crops.
Carbendazim is a post-emergence contact herbicide that works by inhibiting protoporphyrin oxidase in weeds, leading to the formation of toxic tetrapyrrole compounds that accumulate and kill the plant. It is effective against a variety of broadleaf weeds, including medlar, amaranth, Xanthium, Solanum nigrum, purslane, comfrey, and thorny vegetables. This herbicide acts quickly and has high activity without affecting the crop after application. When applying acesulfame in wheat fields, it's best to do so before winter, using the correct dosage. The temperature should be above 10°C; otherwise, it may cause phytotoxicity, resulting in yellowing of wheat leaves, though recovery is usually possible over time.
