Silicon Valley Solar Energy's 44.1% Battery Efficiency Sets World Record

On August 22, 2013, IQE plc, the global leader in semiconductor wafer manufacturing, announced that its high-volume production materials had achieved a photovoltaic cell efficiency of 44.1%, as certified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This marked a significant breakthrough, surpassing the previous efficiency record held by Solar Junction's standard three-junction CPV cell. Solar Junction, a Silicon Valley-based company specializing in high-efficiency multi-junction solar cells for concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) systems, relies on IQE’s advanced MBE tools—specifically silicon wafers—to produce its cutting-edge photovoltaic cells. The collaboration between the two companies has been key to achieving these performance milestones. In October 2012, Solar Junction had already set a new benchmark when its cell achieved a power conversion efficiency of 44% under a sunlight intensity of 947 W/m². This surpassed their own previous record of 41.35%, set in April 2011, and both achievements were officially recognized by NREL.
