More than 300 online shop selling fake 3M masks

In a recent crackdown, law enforcement agencies in Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang have successfully dismantled several major counterfeit 3M mask operations. According to reports from the "Morning Morning Post," criminals exploited the popularity of 3M masks, producing and selling fake versions through both online and physical stores. The Municipal Public Security Bureau and Fengxian County Public Security Branch conducted simultaneous raids, shutting down 8 criminal networks involved in the production and sale of fake masks. Over 18 warehouses were seized, with more than 900,000 semi-finished products and over 46 million yuan worth of counterfeit goods confiscated. The issue of fake 3M masks has been particularly prevalent on platforms like Taobao. Earlier this year, an agent of 3M reported that counterfeit masks were flooding the market. After investigation, authorities identified over 300 suspicious online stores. For example, the popular 8210 model was being sold for as low as 1.4 yuan per piece on some sites, significantly below the official price of 8-9 yuan. In some shops, real and fake masks were mixed, making it hard for consumers to tell the difference. Investigators conducted three rounds of screening on these websites. First, they found that the minimum cost of the 8210 mask was much lower than the listed price. Second, they noticed misleading claims about the product's effectiveness, such as "preventing bird flu" and "blocking PM2.5." Finally, they reviewed customer feedback, where many reported that the masks leaked or had a strong plastic smell — something that would not occur with genuine 3M masks. Seven online shops were targeted, and 30 masks were purchased from each. All were confirmed to be fake after testing by the manufacturer. By cross-referencing data provided by 3M, investigators traced the locations of the counterfeit operations and identified 18 production, sales, and storage sites. On May 20, a joint operation was launched across Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, resulting in the seizure of over 180,000 fake 3M masks and a production line. The value of the seized goods exceeded 110 million yuan. Testing by 3M (China) Co., Ltd. revealed that the fake masks offered little to no protection, with filtration efficiency far below national standards. Some masks emitted harmful odors, violating safety regulations and posing health risks. As part of a broader anti-crime campaign, public security agencies in the city have arrested over 31,000 suspects since the operation began, a 9.9% increase compared to the same period last year. More than 13,000 cases have been solved, with a 25.9% rise in case resolution and a 25.7% improvement in detection rates. The 3M mask crackdown is considered one of the most significant operations in recent years.
