Sage cultivation technique

Sage Cultivation Techniques

Sage thrives in well-drained, sandy loam or deep loam soil with good air circulation and ample sunlight. For planting, sow seeds directly in the field or start them in a nursery before transplanting. Place 3 to 5 seeds per hole. Once the seedlings emerge after about a week, thin them out so that each plant has a spacing of 20 to 30 cm. This helps the plants grow stronger and healthier. Different sage varieties may require varying light intensities, so it's important to research the specific needs of the variety you are growing.

Propagation can be done through seeds or cuttings.

1. Seed Propagation

Seeds can be sown in spring or early autumn. To improve germination, soak the small seeds in warm water (around 50°C) for a while, then rinse them when the temperature drops to 30°C. Alternatively, you can keep them in water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow the seeds shallowly, cover lightly with soil, and keep the soil consistently moist. You can either direct-seed in the field or transplant seedlings later.

2. Cutting Propagation

In May or June, take cuttings from the tips of non-woody branches, about 5 to 8 cm long. Remove the lower leaves, leaving 2 to 3 at the base. Insert the cuttings into a prepared seedbed at a spacing of 5 cm by 5 cm, and plant them about 2.5 to 3 cm deep. Water thoroughly, cover with plastic film to maintain moisture, and wait for roots to develop—usually within 20 to 30 days. After rooting, transplant them to their final location with a spacing of 45 to 50 cm between rows and 25 to 30 cm between plants.

Once established, regularly remove weeds and water during dry periods. Drain excess water after heavy rains. During the growing season, apply fertilizer 2 to 3 times, using approximately 5 kg of urea per mu. In northern regions of the Yangtze River, cultivate the soil to a depth of 20 cm before winter to protect the plants from freezing. In spring, water the soil to encourage new growth. In southern China, sage can overwinter without additional protection.
