Home decoration bathroom waterproof construction precautions

1. Be cautious not to damage the original waterproof layer during bathroom renovation:

When renovating a bathroom, it's crucial to protect the existing waterproofing system. Many homeowners assume that the previous owner has already installed a proper waterproof layer, but this is not always the case. During hydropower or layout changes, pipes and drainage systems might be altered, which could risk damaging the original waterproofing. Always monitor the work and remind the contractors to avoid any unnecessary damage. If the original layer is compromised, it must be repaired immediately or even completely redone to prevent future leaks.

2. Choose the right waterproofing material:

The Ministry of Construction recommends using one-component environmentally-friendly polyurethane coating for waterproofing. This material is ideal because it adheres well to pipes and floors, penetrates into small gaps, and doesn’t shrink after drying. Compared to rigid materials like cement-based waterproofing, it’s more flexible and suitable for areas with many joints and corners. The cost is around 50–60 yuan per square meter, making it affordable for most homeowners.

3. Avoid applying waterproofing on rainy days:

To achieve the best results, the waterproof coating should be applied in at least three layers. One-component polyurethane typically needs 3–4 days to dry fully. If applied during rain, the effectiveness of the coating may be significantly reduced, leading to poor performance and potential water seepage later on.

4. Don’t forget the floor waterproofing:

Before laying tiles, make sure the floor is properly waterproofed. After the tiles are placed, ensure there’s a slight slope (about 1%) on the surface to allow water to drain toward the floor drain. This helps prevent water from pooling and reduces the risk of moisture buildup.

5. Apply waterproofing to the walls as well:

Water splashes onto adjacent walls when taking a shower, so wall waterproofing is just as important as floor waterproofing. Without it, moisture can cause mold and mildew on the walls. It’s recommended to waterproof walls up to 30 cm in height, but for non-load-bearing walls, the waterproofing should extend to at least 1.8 meters to provide full protection.

6. Always conduct a waterproof test:

After completing the waterproofing, it’s essential to perform a thorough inspection. If the test fails, the project should be redone immediately. To ensure quality, consider hiring a professional to supervise the process. A good waterproofing job is vital to avoid long-term issues and maintain the integrity of your bathroom.
