Smart substation gradually becomes a new trend in the industry development

Since 2011, the State Grid Smart Substation initiative has experienced rapid development. A total of 641 smart substations (excluding new-generation smart substations and standard distribution-type ones for special tenders) were included in the State Grid's regular batch tenders. These figures were collected to maintain a consistent ratio, and thus did not include 35kV voltage level projects. The number of smart substation tenders increased by 14.1% compared to the previous year. Although the growth rate slowed down due to the base effect, the overall volume remained substantial. In the first halves of 2011, 2012, and 2013, the numbers of smart substation monitoring systems tendered were 284 sets, 1,050 sets, and 641 sets respectively. The smart rates during these periods were 23.2%, 60.9%, and 64.4%. It is clear that by mid-2013, the scale and smart rate of smart substation construction remained high, despite a drop in the third tender’s smart rate (45.6%)—which was lower than the 36.4% seen in 2012. However, we believe that the smart rate for centralized tenders in 2013 is expected to continue rising. This expectation can be verified by the rebound in both the scale and smart rate of substation monitoring systems in the fourth batch of power transmission and transformation equipment in 2013. Therefore, we maintain our earlier judgment that the comprehensive promotion of smart substation construction will drive sustained demand for products like intelligent substation monitoring and smart relay protection. In the first two batches of 2013 centralized bidding (excluding special tenders), a total of 13 companies secured contracts. Among them, 12 won bids for intelligent control systems, while 11 secured traditional monitoring system contracts. Within the listed companies, Sifang Stock, Changyuan Group, and Guodian Nanrui had a higher share of successful bids. Their winning percentages in the smart and traditional substation markets for 110 (66) to 750kV projects exceeded 10%. Additionally, a key feature of smart substation construction in 2012 was the diversification of technology routes. In December 2012, the State Grid launched a new generation of smart substation demonstration projects, including six pilot initiatives: Chongqing Hechuan 220kV Dashichang, Wuhan Future Science and Technology City 110kV East Expansion, Tianjin 110kV High-tech Park, Beijing 220kV Future City Substation, and 110kV Seafall and 110kV Leaf Ponds in Shanghai. These projects were expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2013. The new generation of smart substations emphasizes "integrated intelligent equipment and integrated business systems," aiming to shift from specialized design to integrated design. It also marks a transition from single-device intelligence to intelligent primary equipment, incorporating advanced and applicable technologies. Shen Guorong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, summarized the features of the new power transformation technologies as "a highly integrated system, rational structural layout, advanced and applicable equipment, and energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions."
