Sharp develops transparent solar cell modules that combine generation and lighting

Sharp is set to introduce five innovative transparent solar module models on July 31, 2013. This follows the company's earlier release of the first transparent solar cell module, "NA-B095AA," in September 2012. These new products aim to expand the application of solar technology into everyday architectural elements, making renewable energy more seamlessly integrated into modern living spaces. The transparent solar cell modules are created by etching thin trenches into thin-film silicon solar cells. While these trenches do not generate electricity, they allow for a balance between power generation and visibility, making them ideal for use in places like balcony railings, windows, curtain walls, and eaves—areas where glass is typically installed. Among the five new models, the NA-B07A and NA-B07B are smaller than the original NA-B095AA, designed specifically for open-ended balcony railings that prioritize ventilation. These models also offer improved anti-static performance, approximately 1.9 times better than the NA-B095AA, making them suitable for high-rise buildings. Additionally, there are versions with an opening ratio of 10% and 20%, giving users flexibility depending on their needs. The NA-B11A and NA-B11B are tailored to support a 1200mm column spacing commonly used in Japanese construction. They measure 1150mm in width, accounting for wiring and window frame connections between multiple modules. These models are ideal for curtain walls and skylights installed in ceilings. Of the five products, the NA-B07A and NA-B11A focus on maximizing power generation with a 10% aperture ratio, while the other three prioritize light transmission with a 20% aperture ratio.
