China Aluminum Online recently reported that to effectively address water pollution in the production of aluminum alloy products, Foshan Huachang Aluminum Profile Factory has been collaborating with South China University of Technology since last year. The goal is to develop a chromium-free passivation technology for aluminum alloys. After more than six months of research and testing, several key performance indicators have met the expected standards.
According to an official from Huachang, the new chromium-free passivation technology replaces the traditional chromate treatment method, which significantly reduces water pollution during the manufacturing process. This project has drawn attention from environmental protection authorities in Guangdong Province and Foshan City. It was selected as one of the "2008 Guangdong and Hong Kong Key Breakthrough Projects in Key Areas (Foshan Special Projects)" under the "Key Energy-Saving and Emission Reduction Technology" category. The company aims to complete the full development of this technology within three years.
Although the wastewater test results are still slightly below national standards, other performance metrics such as impact resistance and bending resistance have already met the required levels. The team is optimistic and expects the project to be completed ahead of schedule.
It's worth noting that the current surface treatment process in the aluminum extrusion industry typically involves chemical conversion coatings containing chromium compounds. These substances are toxic and can cause serious environmental and health risks if not properly managed. In contrast, the rare earth-based conversion film used in the new technology is non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and offers excellent corrosion resistance. As a result, this innovative approach has gained significant recognition in the industry and is expected to become a leading alternative to traditional chromate treatments in the near future.
