How to Properly Choose and Use Ladders Safely:

Ladder-related incidents are among the most common causes of workplace injuries. Every day, hundreds of people get injured or even lose their lives due to improper ladder use or the use of substandard ladders. That’s why safety training is essential in preventing such accidents and protecting lives.

There are many types of ladders, each designed for specific purposes. They come in different materials—wood, aluminum, fiberglass, and more. Each type also has varying lengths, weight capacities, and structural features. For example, in electrical environments, it's crucial to use fiberglass ladders to avoid the risk of electric shock. Before using a ladder, always inspect it carefully for loose joints, broken rungs, or damaged parts. Never use a ladder that shows any signs of wear or damage.

For safe use, place the ladder on a flat, stable surface and ensure the top doesn’t come into contact with overhead hazards like power lines. When using a straight ladder, set it at a safe angle—ideally 75.5 degrees, or a 4:1 ratio between the base and the height. A simple way to check this is by standing at the base and reaching up with your hand—if you can just touch the ladder without stretching too much, it’s likely at the correct angle.

When climbing, always maintain three points of contact with the ladder—two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Never carry tools or objects while climbing, as this increases the risk of falling. If you need to reach high, make sure the ladder extends at least 3 feet (0.91 meters) above the working surface. Avoid overreaching, and keep your body centered between the side rails. Always climb down, move the ladder, and then climb back up if needed.

It's important to note that training alone isn't enough. Experienced workers may take shortcuts or engage in risky behavior to save time. This is why the design of safe ladders plays a critical role in preventing unsafe actions from happening in the first place. By combining proper training with well-designed equipment, we can significantly reduce the risks associated with ladder use and create a safer working environment for everyone.
