Children's furniture is a selling point

As the "1st of June" approaches, the sales of children's furniture in major furniture stores across the province have started to pick up. Many parents are taking advantage of promotional discounts to create a personalized space for their kids, aiming to make lasting childhood memories. Home is the most important environment for children’s growth, and as such, the health, safety, eco-friendliness, and human-centered design of children’s furniture have become key concerns for parents when making purchases.

New regulations are driving healthier market development. In recent years, with increasing parental awareness of children’s room environments, the children’s furniture market has seen a surge in activity. However, the industry has faced challenges, including a mix of quality products and unscrupulous competitors, leading to a chaotic market. To address this, the national government introduced the "New National Standard" – "General Technical Conditions for Children's Furniture" – in August 2012. This regulation brought much-needed clarity and direction to the sector. According to a reporter, since the implementation of the new standard last year, the children’s furniture market in China has gradually become more standardized. During a visit to some furniture stores in Chengdu, it was observed that while only a small portion of the store focused on children’s furniture, the variety of styles was impressive. Sales staff confirmed that their products were produced in strict compliance with the new standards, and even those not meeting the "corner" or "material" requirements had been reprocessed or recycled. Consumers can now shop with greater confidence. During a random interview with several customers, many expressed that buying children’s furniture is still a complex process. While they appreciate the introduction of national regulations, they remain concerned about enforcement. Ms. Liu, a local parent, said, “Regulations are helpful, but it doesn’t mean all companies will follow them. Buying well-known brands is the safest choice. It gives peace of mind. But even then, there are always worries about safety and environmental impact. If something goes wrong, it’s important to have accountability. Beyond the new standards, stricter market supervision is also needed.”

Education through design. In 2013, pine wood became the top choice for children’s furniture. Many brands incorporated vibrant colors into their designs, appealing to young children’s love for bright and colorful spaces. The "suite" style of furniture, offering a complete room setup, has also gained popularity, reducing the hassle of assembling individual pieces. Additionally, children’s furniture has become more diverse, featuring cartoon and anime elements, as well as soft European or Korean-inspired designs. Some brands even offer theme-based furniture tailored to different genders. Studies suggest that creating a child-friendly room with professional furniture can positively influence a child’s development. More parents are now recognizing the importance of a dedicated space for their children. Alongside creative and themed furniture, household items that combine storage and decoration have also emerged, reflecting a growing trend toward fun and interactive design. A home furnishings brand shared insights that, due to busy schedules, parents often lack time to spend with their kids. Arranging a child’s room together and organizing toys can be a meaningful family activity. Through this process, children gain an understanding of their parents’ efforts, develop logical thinking skills, and learn to manage clutter, ultimately building good habits from an early age.
