Solar Screen: New Technology for Automatic Charging

In the case of smart phone battery technology can not be broken, increase the battery capacity, charging at any time has become a compromise solution. There are already many companies and research institutes that are developing this technology. Unlike people who imagined batteries on the back of the fuselage, they studied how to incorporate PV modules into panels or glass. Ubiquitous Energy, a startup company from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is developing a transparent material that can absorb infrared and ultraviolet rays while allowing light to pass through. Cambridge University researchers are expanding toward another idea, integrating solar cells with OLED screens to capture the light from the pixel gaps.

Placing PV modules on the front is more conducive to use. Usually, in order not to miss notifications and avoid scratching the screen, people like to put the screen up. In the past, the practice of putting solar energy on the back did not conform to the user's habits and could not obtain sufficient energy.

SunPartner, a startup company based in Aix-en-Provence, France, is also working on panel solar technology. Unlike its predecessors, SunPartner's technology is more sophisticated and mature, and it can be used commercially soon.

SunPartner's product ideas are shown in the figure below. The standard PV modules are arranged in a stripe pattern, and transparent film strips are alternately stacked to form a plane with a layer of wavy lenses. Due to the principle of light refraction, the lens will enlarge the content behind the transparent film and reduce the display of the photovoltaic module. When the sun shines, the lens can focus the light on the PV module.

This approach makes use of optical “tricks”. The obvious disadvantage is that it cannot be 100% transparent. At present, it can only achieve 82% transparency, and it can reach 90% in the future. The company has more than 30 related patents.

SunPartner claims that this glass can increase the life of the mobile phone by 20%, and it lasts about 2 hours of battery life. The resulting cost increase is $2.3. It is currently working with three mobile phone manufacturers and is expected to be available in early 2014. Wmpoweruser called Nokia one of them.

Using the screen to do the charging component is really a great idea. It will be more effective on large screen devices such as iPad and Kindle. Maybe we will soon see such devices available.
