1. High transparency. Plexiglass is currently the best polymer material in terms of optical clarity, with a light transmittance of up to 92%, which is even higher than that of glass. The tube used in the so-called "artificial sun" system is made of quartz because it allows full transmission of ultraviolet light. In contrast, regular glass only lets through about 0.6% of UV light, while plexiglass allows as much as 73% of it to pass through. This makes it ideal for applications where UV protection or transmission is important.
2. Excellent mechanical strength. With a molecular weight of around 2 million, plexiglass is a long-chain polymer with soft molecular chains, yet it exhibits remarkable strength. Its tensile and impact resistance are approximately 18 times greater than that of ordinary glass. When heated and stretched, the molecules align in a more ordered structure, significantly enhancing its toughness. For instance, if a nail is driven into plexiglass, it won’t crack or shatter. Even when shot at, this type of plexiglass doesn’t break into sharp pieces, making it suitable for bulletproof windows and aircraft canopies.
3. Lightweight. With a density of 1.18 g/cm³, plexiglass is much lighter than glass—only half the weight of the same size of glass—and just 43% of the weight of aluminum, a well-known lightweight metal. This makes it an excellent choice for applications where weight reduction is crucial, such as in aerospace or automotive industries.
4. Easy to process. Plexiglass is highly versatile in terms of manufacturing. It can be cut using lathes, drilled with drills, and even dissolved with solvents like acetone or chloroform. It can also be shaped through various plastic processing techniques, including blow molding, injection molding, and extrusion. This flexibility allows it to be used in a wide range of products—from large aircraft cockpits to small dental trays and everyday containers.
