Application analysis of water slag in thermal insulation


Slag is a process where molten blast furnace slag is rapidly cooled in water, typically through water quenching either in a slag pool or before the furnace. This method produces a granulated material known as water slag, which is widely used in construction materials such as cement and concrete. Due to its latent hydraulic properties, slag can act as a high-quality raw material for cement when activated by substances like clinker, lime, and gypsum. It forms various types of cements, including acid cement, gypsum-based slag cement, lime-based slag cement, and is also used in the production of slag bricks, slag concrete, and more.

In the field of cementitious materials, slag has a wide range of applications. These include slag Portland cement, gypsum slag cement, lime slag cement, wet slag concrete, and even exterior wall insulation materials. Additionally, slag can serve as a fine aggregate in concrete, improving the grading of sand, reducing the overall density of the concrete, and acting as an effective insulating material. The use of water slag in insulation systems, especially for exterior walls, is a key application worth discussing.

When used as an insulation material, water slag exhibits several beneficial characteristics:

1. It is lightweight and porous, with a low density ranging from 250 to 400 kg/m³, making it highly effective for thermal insulation;
2. It can withstand high temperatures and is suitable for insulation in industrial pipes and equipment operating at temperatures below 600°C;
3. Its flexibility helps reduce damage caused by thermal expansion and vibration.

As an alternative to traditional insulation materials, slag can replace foam concrete for roof insulation and can also substitute for diatomite and asbestos ash in the insulation of industrial pipelines. This makes it a sustainable and cost-effective choice in many construction scenarios.
