Introduction to halogen bulbs

Halogen lamps, also known as tungsten-halogen bulbs, are a type of incandescent light source. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, they contain a small amount of halogen gas, such as iodine or bromine, inside the glass envelope. When the lamp is turned on, the filament heats up to extremely high temperatures, causing some of the tungsten to evaporate. The halogen gas then reacts with the evaporated tungsten, forming a compound that travels back to the filament. At the high temperature of the filament, this compound breaks down, and the tungsten re-deposits onto the filament. This process, known as the halogen cycle, helps extend the life of the bulb and improves its efficiency compared to standard incandescent lamps. As a result, halogen bulbs not only last longer but also produce a brighter, whiter light. They are commonly used in applications where high-quality lighting is needed, such as in automotive headlights, stage lighting, and photography. However, due to their high operating temperatures, they should be handled with care and are less energy-efficient than modern LED alternatives.
