High precision disc blade processing technology

High-precision disc inserts are widely used in various industries, including the automobile sheet metal sector, water tank belt manufacturing, shearing machine production, high-speed rail component fabrication, electrical and electronic equipment factories, steel mills, and specialized copper processing plants. These inserts are primarily used to cut full sheets of metal or roll them into strips of specific widths as required by customers. Our company produces φ 250mm × φ 160mm × 5mm high-precision disc inserts for our clients. These inserts demand exceptional accuracy, with a thickness tolerance of ±0.001mm and parallelism within 0.002mm. After heat treatment, the discs are ground on an M7340 round table grinder. However, one common issue is poor parallelism, mainly due to the thinness of the disc blade. During heat treatment, the disc tends to deform, and although the thickness (5±0.001mm) meets the requirements when measured with a dial micrometer, the parallelism fails during testing on a flat plate, making it unsuitable for the design specifications. Upon investigation, we found that the deformation occurs because the disc blade is too thin, causing it to warp during heat treatment. When processed using electromagnetic clamping, the weak magnetic force isn't sufficient to hold the blade securely, leading to deformation after the magnetic force is removed. To address this, the key was to reduce the electromagnetic attraction during processing. To solve this problem, we designed a specialized tooling system. The tooling features a small φ 20mm hole at the bottom that aligns with the machine table's center positioning hole. The outer diameter of the tooling is set to match the 250mm outer diameter of the disc blade, while the upper step is pressed against the disc. The inner hole is sized to 160mm, and the end face includes a φ 4mm pin positioned at the center distance of the disc’s inner diameter. This tooling is made from cast iron, which has poor magnetic permeability, helping to minimize deformation. After heat treatment, the disc undergoes rough machining first, followed by inner hole processing and an R2mm slot via electrical discharge machining. The disc is then aligned with the tooling using the pin, ensuring stable and accurate processing. Once clamped onto the workbench, the tooling is first adjusted to ensure it is parallel to the surface. The disc blade is placed on the tooling and held using weak magnetic adsorption. Due to the large contact area between the tooling and the workbench, along with the tooling's substantial weight, the weak magnetic force is sufficient to meet processing needs without deforming the blade. The precision of the disc insert requires multiple stages: rough grinding, semi-finishing, and fine grinding. Each stage involves stress relief to maintain dimensional stability. Throughout the process, the disc must be frequently flipped, and feed rates must be carefully controlled to avoid any damage. Through practical application, we have refined this method and developed a complete processing and testing system. As a result, we have become one of the few manufacturers capable of producing disc blades with ±0.001mm accuracy. Our products now meet domestic advanced standards and can replace imported alternatives. The quality has been well-received by customers, and we continue to collaborate with domestic manufacturers to meet their evolving needs.
