How a Zinc Protective Coating Keeps Your Fence Safe

Chain-link fences are a cost-effective and durable option for securing your property. With the right protective coating, they can last for many years, even in harsh weather conditions. The type of material you choose plays a big role in how well your fence will hold up over time.

Zinc Plating vs Galvanizing
Both zinc plating and galvanizing use zinc to protect metal surfaces, but they differ in application and durability. Zinc plating typically has a thin layer of around 3 microns, while galvanizing involves dipping the metal into molten zinc, resulting in a much thicker coating—usually about 50 microns. This makes galvanized coatings more resistant to damage. Even if scratched or exposed, the zinc continues to act as a barrier, protecting the underlying metal from rust. In fact, when a cut is made, the zinc reacts with oxygen to form a protective oxide layer that prevents further corrosion.

Cold Galvanizing
If your fence is already installed, you can apply a zinc-based primer before painting. This process is often referred to as "cold galvanizing." While regular paint offers some protection, it can wear away over time, especially at edges or where the surface is damaged. A thin coat of zinc primer helps prevent moisture from reaching the metal, offering better long-term protection against rust and corrosion.

Zinc Sacrificial Anodes
Zinc anodes have been used for years on ships and boats to prevent corrosion. These anodes work by attracting corrosive elements like salt and water, sacrificing themselves to protect the main structure. Similarly, attaching zinc anodes along your chain-link fence can help prevent rust and extend its lifespan, especially in coastal or high-moisture environments.

How Chain-Link Fencing Is Galvanized
There are two main methods of galvanizing chain-link fencing: GAW (Galvanized After Weaving) and GBW (Galvanized Before Weaving). In GAW, the steel wires are first woven into panels and then coated with zinc. In GBW, each wire is galvanized before being woven. GAW is the most common method because it provides better coverage on cut ends and welded joints, making it more durable and less prone to rust. However, both methods offer good protection depending on your needs and budget.

Fittings and Hardware
Don’t forget about the small parts of your fence, such as nuts, bolts, gate hardware, and other components. These should also be protected with galvanizing to avoid rust and staining. Not all fittings come with this coating, so it's important to ask your supplier about the quality of the materials. Corroded parts can lead to unsightly rust spots and weaken the overall structure of your fence.

When choosing a chain-link fence, consider how long you want it to last, the amount of traffic or exposure it will face, and your budget. By selecting the right materials and protective coatings, you can ensure your fence remains strong and visually appealing for years to come.
