For the first time in its 103-year history, Chile’s iconic Chuquicamata open-pit copper mine, operated by the state-owned Codelco, reported a financial loss in 2022. This marks a significant turning point for one of the world’s most famous mining operations, which has long been a cornerstone of Chile’s economy and global copper supply.
According to a report submitted to the Chilean Securities and Insurance Regulatory Agency (SVS), the mine recorded a loss of $233 million in 2022, compared to a profit of $247 million in 2011. The decline was attributed to lower copper output, which led to reduced revenues. Additionally, the company faced increased operational costs, including the layoff of 2,150 workers and an extra $200 million in severance payments. Employees also negotiated a $300 million year-end bonus through collective bargaining, further impacting the bottom line.
Copper union representatives have criticized the management for poor planning and operational inefficiencies, arguing that the losses were avoidable. They claim that the mine’s performance could have been better managed with more strategic investment and improved resource allocation.
In 2012, Chuquicamata produced 355,000 tons of copper, a drop of 87,000 tons from the previous year. This output was even lower than that of other Codelco mines, such as Radomiro Tomic and El Teniente. Meanwhile, two other Codelco-owned mines—Salvador and Ventanas—reported losses of $98 million and $51 million, respectively, highlighting broader challenges within the company’s operations.
The situation at Chuquicamata raises concerns about the long-term sustainability of large-scale open-pit mining in Chile, especially as global demand for copper continues to rise due to the energy transition and green technology development. With aging infrastructure and declining ore grades, the future of this historic mine remains uncertain.
