For the first time in its 103-year history, Chile's iconic Chuquicamata open-pit copper mine has reported a financial loss. Owned by the state-run Codelco (Chilean National Copper Company), the mine, once a symbol of Chile's economic strength, saw a significant downturn in 2022. According to a report submitted to the Securities and Insurance Regulatory Agency (SVS), the mine recorded a loss of $233 million last year, compared to a profit of $247 million in 2011.
The decline in production was a key factor behind the loss. Output dropped significantly, leading to lower revenues. In addition, the company made substantial cuts, laying off 2,150 workers and spending an extra $200 million on severance packages. Meanwhile, labor unions negotiated a $300 million year-end bonus for employees, further straining the mine’s finances. Unions argue that the losses were not due to market conditions but rather poor management and long-term planning failures.
In 2012, Chuquicamata produced 355,000 tons of copper, down 87,000 tons from the previous year. This drop placed it below other Codelco-owned mines like Radomiro Tomic and El Teniente. Even more concerning, two other mines—Salvador and Ventanas—reported losses of $98 million and $51 million respectively in the same year.
