Solar stove promotion and application

Solar cookers have seen significant promotion and adoption in China, particularly in the sun-rich western regions such as Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Tibet, Sichuan, and Yunnan. This development has been strongly supported by both national and local governments. By the end of 2006, the Ministry of Agriculture completed a solar thermal project with an investment of 8.7 million yuan in two Tibetan autonomous prefectures—Ganzi in Sichuan and Yushu in Qinghai. A total of 22,800 herders from 372 villages across 88 townships in 11 counties were equipped with solar cookers, achieving one household per stove. This initiative helped save approximately 13.68 million yuan in labor costs for the local communities. In 2008, the Ministry of Agriculture expanded these efforts, implementing solar thermal projects in Tibetan areas across four provinces, including Qinghai, as well as in the arid regions of central Ningxia. To support this, the ministry allocated 77.41 million yuan in central funding to 64 counties in areas like Guoluo and Hainan in Qinghai, Huangnan, Ganzi and Aba in Sichuan, Gannan in Gansu, and Diqing in Yunnan. Over 200,000 farmers and herders installed 198,235 solar cookers during this period, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing reliance on traditional fuels.
