Carbon dioxide can be used for cell phone battery recycling

A new technology uses captured carbon dioxide to extract useful metals from smartphone batteries, which makes it more economical.

Julien Leclaire of the University of Lyon in France said that extracting useful metals while injecting carbon dioxide adds value to a cost-intensive process.

Carbon dioxide emissions are the main cause of climate change, so many people try to capture it with technology and store it underground. But the problem is that such carbon capture and storage is too expensive. "No one wants to pay for this." Leclaire said.

To make carbon capture and storage more attractive, Leclaire and his team discovered new uses for carbon dioxide.

Leclaire and colleagues cooled the carbon dioxide collected from the exhaust of the car and then injected it into a chemical mixture called polyamine. Carbon dioxide and polyamines combine to form many molecules of different shapes and sizes.

The research team found that this process can distinguish between metal mixtures. In a series of experiments, they successfully separated lanthanum, cobalt and nickel-these metals are used in batteries, smartphones, computers and magnets.

If this process can be scaled up, it will be a more environmentally friendly recycling method for batteries and other electrical equipment. Recycling of batteries and the like usually uses highly active chemicals such as acids, which can cause potential pollution. Leclaire said that replacing it with carbon dioxide will greatly reduce the environmental footprint of the recycling process.

Other researchers and companies are trying to convert the captured carbon dioxide into useful materials, such as plastics that are usually produced from petroleum raw materials, but this is chemically difficult. Leclaire believes that his method is more in line with the natural properties of carbon dioxide. "Instead of simulating the use of petroleum raw materials to do better and cheaper things, it is better to look for something that can only be done with carbon dioxide." (Wen Lele)
