Imec, the Belgian Institute of Nanotechnology, announced that its i-PERC-type silicon-based solar cells developed using the new process have achieved 20.2% conversion efficiency. According to Imec, this result is mainly due to a new aluminum oxide (Al2O3) atomic layer deposition (ALD) laser doping technology process.
This new process uses an aluminum back-surface field (BSF) and nickel-copper coating to form the electrodes, which simplifies the process of forming the BSF by excitation and provides a lower temperature permit for the metallization process. According to the agency, lowering the temperature is a key factor for Imec's improvement in i-Perc efficiency.
