Japan has developed new materials that can release heat storage under low pressure conditions

Researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan have developed a new type of material that can store heat for a long time. They call this material a heat storage ceramic. This is a heat storage material that can be used as a solar thermal power generation system or to effectively utilize industrial waste heat to recycle heat energy, because this material can release stored heat energy under weak pressure conditions.

Materials that can store heat include bricks or concrete that slowly release stored heat, while other materials such as water or glycol absorb heat when they are converted from solid to liquid. However, none of these materials can store heat for long periods of time because they release heat slowly and naturally over time. A material that stores heat for long periods of time and releases heat for a specified period of time is a boon for the renewable energy sector.

The research team of Professor Ohkoshi from the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo in Japan developed this heat storage ceramic that can store heat for a long time. This material, called strip λ pentoxide pentoxide, consists of only titanium and oxygen atoms and is capable of absorbing and releasing large amounts of thermal energy (230 kJ L-1). The stored thermal energy is very large, equivalent to 70% phase change energy storage with water at the melting point. In addition, under weak pressure conditions, 60 MPa (mega Pascal) promotes the strip-like λ-penta-pentaoxide phase to β-penta-pentaoxide, releasing stored heat. In addition to the direct application of thermal energy, heat can also be stored to cause the material to repeatedly absorb and release heat through various methods through the current of the material or by means of light.

Strip λ pentoxide is a simple titanium oxide with abundant elements and is environmentally friendly. At present, heat storage ceramics are expected to become new materials for solar power generation systems. European countries are actively promoting their applications, and it can effectively utilize industrial waste heat. This material can also be used in advanced electronic devices such as pressure sensitive sheets, reusable heating pads, pressure sensitive conductive sensors, current driven resistive random access memories (ReRAM), and optical memories.
